A while ago I posted about a project I hope would bring solace to people who have lost a loved one. And today, on November 27, 2006 it has been unveiled. At approximately 12:30pm invitations were sent out to my brother Eddie's friends to sign up for WarmTribute.com. The following is the main content of that invitation:

Hi,

This is Fleming, the younger brother of Eddie Au.

Today, November 27th, 2006 marks the one year anniversary of Eddie?s passing. During this year, it has been difficult for many of us to express how we truly feel. At least, I know it has been for me. So, in dedication to Eddie, I wanted to create something that would work as a supportive community, time capsule, and an outlet for whomever has lost a loved one. Thus, WarmTribute.com has been created.

This site offers anyone associated with Eddie, the opportunity to share all their fond memories and photos of him. By centralizing our memories and archiving Eddie?s photos, I believe it not only immortalizes Eddie in our hearts, but online as well. This site also provides you with a space to write journal entries that may be used as an outlet for thoughts about Eddie?s passing, or simply regular day-to-day occurrences that you would like to share. Ultimately, I just want to bring some additional solace into our lives.

Please keep in mind that this is an alpha version of the site, so you will probably experience some usability issues, bugs, and missing features. I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know of these occurrences, so that I may continue to enhance the site.

I know I have missed a lot of people in this initial batch of invitations, so please log into the site and go to http://www.warmtribute.com/invite-people.php?t=EddieAu, in order to send out more invitations to whomever you feel would appreciate being a part of Eddie?s Tribute. And if you know of anyone who has lost a loved one recently and you feel they would benefit from creating a tribute, please let them know of WarmTribute.com.

Thank you for your time and please do not hesitate to get in contact with me to simply catch up.

Sincerely,
Fleming

The E-mail above conveys a good portion of the purpose behind this project. I not only wanted to create something for my brother, but for anyone else out there who has suffered a loss. And with this passing year, I have heard of many more losses than I have previously. Again, I hope this site can bring all of you some solace. If you'd like to take a preview of the functionality, please let me know. I have a Sample Tribute set up here: http://www.warmtribute.com/tribute/Sample. You just need to click the Request Invitation link and send me an E-mail.

http://www.warmtribute.com/tribute/EddieAu is the link to my brother Eddie's tribute.
I was a dumb foreigner, but now I'm back to just being dumb =) by Fleming

So, I'm back from Mexico and I've been sitting here at work simply trying to catch up on things and getting back into my daily routine.

I haven't written any long detailed summaries of my trips in a while and due to lack of sleep from last night (insomnia) I don't think I'll be starting now. So, here's a quick summary instead.

10/06/2006 - 10/08/2006: Merida
So my brother and I got into Cancun, got our rental car, and jumped on the MEX180 heading towards Merida. We ended up taking the long route to there and arrived at our Bed and Breakfast at around 8:30pm. We quickly dropped off our bags and walked over to the Historical District's square and had a good dinner at an outside restaurant. We walked around a bit more and bought a couple of elotes, but they aren't as good as the ones in the States because they use white corn instead of yellow. However, it's still great to tried authentic elotes.

The next morning we headed out to Chichen-Itza and walked around taking pictures of the Mayan ruins. Great experience and very awing. The only drawback was that they pretty blocked off most anything you could climb on. However, I still ended up climbing a few walls for the hell of it. Later that night we had dinner and walked around the square some more.

The rest of the time we spent in Merida was very simple. We went to the weekly fairs they hold, which is very upbeat and fun. I'd recommend anyone to go there because it's good to experience being in an English limited country.

10/09/2006 - 10/12/2006: Uxmal
We checked out of our B&B in Merida and headed towards Uxmal, where we checked in at the Club Med and got settled. The first night we just drove to the outskirts of the surrounding Mayan ruins and had dinner at the hotel.

The following day we went to the main Uxmal site. I felt this was better than Chichen-Itza because I was able to walk up the pyramids and wander around more of the area. My brother and I were even able to get up close to a ruin which they hadn't started to excavate yet.

The next day we went out to Kabah, Syil, and L(forgot the name). Pretty much, more Mayan ruins. After a while they really start looking the same, but the experience is still worth it.

I would recommend Uxmal if you're looking for a semi-romantic/adventurous getaway. There aren't many surrounding towns in this area, it's really all for the Mayan ruins. So if you're looking for a peaceful getaway, this is the place to go.

10/13/2006 - 10/15/2006: Isla Mujares
We checked out of Uxmal and get a bit lost going back to the airport in order to return our rental car. We finally make it to the dock that will take us to the island of Isla Mujares. We dock at Isla Mujares at like 8:30pm. My brother and I head out to our hotel. With a slight side-track we finally settle in our room and then head out for dinner. We walked around the island a bit and then headed for bed.

The next day, we put on our trunks and went out to the beach. It's beautiful. I got tanned/burned, but at least I have some color now =). Swam in the sea a bit and realized I'm really not that good of a swimmer - oh well. Afterwards we rented a golf cart and drove around the island, did some souvenir shopping, and had conch soup and grilled conch for dinner. It was soooo goood.

The next day we went back out to the beach in order to even myself out (my back was white), went off in our golf cart again and checked out a turtle farm. We headed back to return our golf cart and then had some dinner. Later that night my brother and I had a few drinks at the outside bars just relaxing and people watching.

They next morning it was time to go home to Chicago, but beforehand I went to the Duty free shop and got a bottle of (the best) tequila, a johnny Walker giftset that contains (red, green, black, and blue label), and a box of cubans. I don't smoke, but c'mon they're cubans!

So that in a nutshell is my trip. I know this post seems long for a short summary, but there were a lot more things that occured. Overall, it was (as most trips are) fun, but this time also more adventurous.

This trip also opened up my eyes as to how hard it was for our ancestors/parents to have come over to a foreign land not knowing the native language well, yet still capable of finding a way to provide for their families and allowing us to have what we take for granted today. I imagined myself being an immigrant to Mexico (I know, funny thought), but I realized how difficult it would be for me to land even the most menial jobs in a land where my communication skills were inhibited.

I have been working on a side project during my free time. I'm expecting to launch it on November 27th in dedication to Eddie. Wish me luck and I hope all who knows Eddie will assist me in making it a success.

I have been a but MIA when it comes to E-mails. I want to thank everyone who has sent me some communication. I apologize for not getting back to you yet, but things have been going up and down.

Time for bed!
Boston, Jetta and Circumstances by Fleming
Posted on: 2006-05-27 at 08:40:32
I'm back in Boston with my oldest brother Danny once again. We took an airplane over here, but we'll be driving back home to Chicago. Since Eddie's passing we have been preparing for the moment when I will be taking his Volkswagen Jetta back and relinquishing my Honda Accord Coupe that I've had for about six years now.

My Accord has brought me many memories. It was with me for the majority of my undergraduate career. As odd as it may sound... those memories will be cherished. However, it's time for new memories and I'm proud to inherit this vehicle for it also brings back fond old memories. Memories such as his road trip from Boston to Chicago and the day his friends went with him to buy the car.

It's funny. If Eddie were still around and at the point where he was willing to sell or give his car to me I would have declined it immediately. However, as we know, circumstances have changed and now I want it deeply.

Circumstances seem to change often, but we never seem to realize it. It's only when you take the time to reflect and analyze what's going on with you or your surroundings that things become more real. These instances will either bring joyful or hurtful times, but regardless it's always good just to take note.
